Moving To Canada, Prepare For Changes
Dec 25th, 2011 Tony Hill
Canada has often been overshadowed by its louder and brasher neighbour - the USA. However, it seems as though many British expats choose to move over there once they've become fed up of the UK.
Canada has a good financial market, meaning that there are good jobs available. Renting was the main form of living until recently when interest rates led to a rise in homeowners. Canada has some of the best natural landscapes and is a great place to live for people who want an active lifestyle. Ice Hockey is the number one sport in Canada and skiing is also popular.
Destinations such as Toronto, Vancouver and Alberta are popular - Alberta because of its proximity to the slopes. Relocating to Canada isn't as straight forward as some people may expect however. Canada has two official languages, English and French and so road signs have to be written in both English and French.
You will also have to get used to a new currency - cents and dollars and if you want to get to the bank you should check out the opening hours as they are not as accommodating as the UK, the majority of banks open from 10am to 3pm.
Little differences such as the products available at supermarkets will take getting used to - and you may begin to appreciate the UK supermarkets for the vast range of products and brands available.
Once you have decided where you want to settle in Canada you will need to think about selling up in the UK - and then you will have to think about what you are going to do with your furniture and household goods. Some people decide to leave the majority of their large furniture back in the UK as they believe that transporting it as far afield as somewhere like Canada will be too much hassle. However, there are some really good international removals companies who will take care of the whole situation for you. They can help to take the stress away from you so you can concentrate on planning the big move.
Having your furniture around will also help you to settle in quicker as you will be familiar with your surroundings.
In order to get into Canada with little trouble you will need to ensure that you have the correct documentation. You will need a Canadian immigrant visa and confirmation of permanent residence for each family member travelling with you. You should also take along with you detailed lists of every personal and household item that you are bringing into Canada, and then a list of every item that you are planning on bringing over on a later date - you should also state how much these items are worth. You will hand these over to a Canadian Customs Officer when you arrive in Canada.
Once you are through customs you can then enjoy your new home in Canada.About the Author:
